Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Virtual school and homeschool are similar in that they’re both options for a home-based K–12 education. However, online public school and homeschool programs are quite different! In the path of traditional homeschooling, parents have complete responsibility for developing or buying their students’ curriculum, teaching the lessons, and grading student work. With an online school, South Carolina students are taught a state-approved curriculum by South Carolina-certified teachers.

Because South Carolina online public schools are part of the state’s public school system, there’s no tuition to attend a South Carolina virtual school. Students receive school from home that meets the same state standards as their peers in brick-and-mortar schools.

At an online public school, South Carolina students learn from home with parent involvement. Through an online learning portal, students connect to their curriculum and lessons daily. Students complete lessons at a pace that works best for their learning preference, with the flexibility to adjust their schedule to meet their needs. Students take part in regular live sessions with specially trained teachers and classmates in a virtual classroom.

Students looking to graduate from a South Carolina online high school must successfully earn a minimum of 24 credits to graduate.
